I wouldn't recommend skipping it since it does include a lot of really big moments, and it plants some seeds that I don't think you'll be able to appreciate future events without (some of which miiiiiiiiiight even connect to the One Piece itself to some capacity.) Short answer: Continue it, Fishman Island is important.
